Healthcare professionals from around the country reinforce the importance of detecting and preventing skin cancer with awareness campaigns.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. The two common forms are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The most dangerous is melanoma.

If detected early and treated the right way, skin cancer is highly curable.

The American Academy of Dermatology is dedicated to giving people tools to help them detect and prevent skin cancer.

One-way is through the AAD’s SPOT skin cancer initiative, https://www.aad.org/public/spot-skin-cancer. It’s designed to involve the public, the academy’s membership of more than 18,000 physicians worldwide, other health organizations, media and for-profit corporations to advance the public’s understanding of skin cancer and motivate them to change their behavior according to its website.

Some resources people can access are skin cancer handouts and information on where to find free skin cancer screenings in their area.

Summit Healthcare is another resource that people in the White Mountains of Arizona can turn to when battling skin cancer or need a skin exam from a doctor.
