Specialized Equipment
Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center is improving the way medications make their way from the pharmacist to the patient. Normally, most non-IV medications are dispensed via the Pyxis machine after pharmacist review. Soon, this process will be accomplished through the Omnicell. The Omnicell is a new and improved automated dispensing machine (ADM) that facilitates accurate and safe selection of medications at the nursing unit and within pharmacy.
The Omnicell System will be implemented in pharmacy, ER, ICU, Med/Surg, OB, OR, Preop and PACU.
Nurses are often challenged with a multitude of medications that sound alike. Drugs like Percocet and Percodan can get confusing. Also, dosing can get confusing; 2.5mg can look like 7.5 mg. This is when mistakes can happen. The Omnicell System can help eliminate human error. When a nurse enters the correct password and ID, he or she can bring up a patient's drug profile and touch the screen where a certain drug in a particular dosage is listed. A locked door then pops open with only that one drug in it and a record of the transaction is sent immediately back to the pharmacy. Contributing to this process are features such as guiding lights that direct the user to the correct medication and automated single dose dispensing of narcotics. The system also alerts for discrepancies and allergies. With this type of technology, medication errors can be cut in half and efficiency can be greatly improved.
Bottom line, the Omnicell System is a flexible medication management tool that helps clinical staff monitor and control medication dispensing, comply with regulatory standards, improve clinical decision making and ultimately improve patient care through increased patient safety. Patients will receive medications quickly and accurately.
Adding the newest technology to assist our staff while keeping our patients safe is just another way Summit Healthcare continues to provide exceptional care, close to home.
PDA'sClinical pharmacists utilize specialize point-of-care computers to guide and document therapeutic interventions.
Micromedex - this online database gives medical personnel current drug information, medication identification tools, patient counseling sheets and medication monitoring guidelines. In addition, the pharmacy maintains a collection of industry leading textbooks and computer software that facilitate the delivery of optimal care and education.
