Nurse Extern Program
The nurse extern program is designed to expand the clinical experience of the
student nurse by partnering the Nurse Extern with an experienced nurse. The
nurse extern performs a wide variety of patient care activities, which includes
participating in patient care; planning, implementation, observation and
evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to the Registered
Nurse. The nurse extern will be providing care based on the competencies
completed from their accredited nursing program. The nurse extern program occurs
from September through May each year.
New Grad Program
The new
graduate program is tailored to suit the individual need of the newly graduated
Registered Nurse. The new graduate is introduced into the unit where they will
be working and is designated a specially trained preceptor/mentor in the
department. Each clinical unit has an orientation program designed from
recommendations from their specialty nursing organization. Orientation lengths
vary by department.
Cross Training
We
value the clinical diversity of our nursing staff. We encourage our nurses who
are interested to become competent in different clinical areas of the hospital
to complete an orientation to that unit. The nurse will then be eligible for any
open shifts on this unit, including any bonus shifts that would be available. We
currently have cross-training opportunities in all of our nursing units.
