Frequently Asked Questions
You may benefit from seeing a neurologist when symptoms suggest a problem involving your brain, spinal cord, nerves, or muscles. These symptoms may include recurring headaches, unexplained numbness, muscle weakness, tremors, seizures, memory changes, balance problems, or coordination issues.
You should also consider an evaluation if neurological symptoms persist, worsen, interfere with daily activities, or don't improve with initial treatment.
Your first appointment will typically include a detailed discussion of your symptoms, health history, medications, and family medical history. Dr. Mannett may ask when your symptoms began, how often they occur, and whether anything makes them better or worse. A neurological examination may assess your strength, reflexes, sensation, balance, coordination, memory, and speech. Based on the findings, Dr. Mannett may recommend testing or develop an individualized treatment plan. Bringing a medication list, previous imaging results, and notes about your symptoms can help you prepare.
The right tests depend on your symptoms and medical history. Dr. Mannett may recommend blood work, diagnostic imaging, or specialized neurological tests to gather more information. An MRI or CT scan can provide detailed images of the brain or spine. An electroencephalogram, commonly called an EEG, measures electrical activity in the brain and may be used when evaluating seizures. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies can help assess nerve and muscle function.
Yes. A neurological evaluation may help determine whether recurring headaches are migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, or symptoms of another condition. Dr. Mannett will consider the location, frequency, duration, triggers, and accompanying symptoms of your headaches. Treatment may involve medication, lifestyle changes, trigger management, or preventive strategies.
Movement disorders can cause tremors, stiffness, slowed movement, involuntary movements, or difficulty with balance and walking. Dr. Mannett may observe your posture, coordination, gait, muscle tone, and movement patterns. Evaluation generally includes reviewing your symptoms, medications, health history, and how the changes affect your daily life. Because several conditions can cause similar symptoms, a careful evaluation is important.
Peripheral neuropathy occurs when nerves outside the brain and spinal cord become damaged or disrupted. It may cause burning, tingling, numbness, sensitivity, weakness, or pain, often beginning in the hands or feet. Diabetes is a common cause, but neuropathy may also be associated with vitamin deficiencies, certain medications, infections, injuries, or other medical conditions. Neurological care focuses on identifying the possible cause, relieving symptoms, protecting affected areas, and helping you maintain function whenever possible.
Yes. Many neurological conditions benefit from continued monitoring rather than a single appointment. Follow-up visits allow Dr. Mannett to evaluate changes in your symptoms, review test results, assess your response to treatment, and adjust your care when appropriate. Summit Healthcare’s collaborative approach also helps coordinate neurological care with primary care providers, rehabilitation professionals, and other specialists.
