Here are four helpful tips to keep in mind as you set out to exercise this autumn:
Layer it on. You need to be warm to stay comfortable and avoid injury. Wearing layers allows you to shed some as your body temperature rises.
Make autumn chores a workout. Us a rake instead of a leaf blower and burn some calories. For example, a 150-pound person who rakes leaves for 30 minutes burns over 130 calories.
Warm up. Warming up is an essential pre-workout step regardless of season, but it’s even more important for avoiding injury when it’s cold out. A 10-minute warm-up should do the trick.
Work out earlier in the day. Because the sun sets much sooner in cooler months, 6 p.m. can feel a lot later than it actually is, making it easier to forgo getting in a workout. Shoot for working out in the morning or during daytime hours.
Have a drink. Always remember to stay hydrated and cool down after exercising, regardless of which season it is.
