What is Hyperbaric Treatment Used for?

A girl in a black T-shirt lies in a hyperbaric chamber, oxygen therapy. At Summit Healthcare, we are proud to be home to a Hyperbaric Center. As a rural hospital in Northeastern Arizona, we know this treatment is an important part of bringing state-of-the-art wound care to our community and surrounding communities.

The hyperbaric chamber provides a pressurized environment that delivers 100 percent oxygen. As you breathe in the oxygen, it increases the amount in your bloodstream, which has been linked to numerous benefits:

  • Faster wound healing
  • Reduced swelling in the wounded tissue
  • Improved immune system function
  • New production of blood vessels

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Summit Healthcare can be a great addition to a comprehensive treatment plan for chronic and non-healing wounds, such as:

  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Surgical wounds
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Burns
  • Vasculitis
  • Radiation injuries
  • Radio-necrosis

In the chamber, oxygen is delivered at higher pressure compared to the normal, outside environment. This allows the oxygen to get efficiently absorbed into your bloodstream.

What’s the experience like? It’s very normal to feel nervous about getting into the clear plastic chamber for the oxygen treatment. We take all the time you need to explain the process and make sure your questions are answered. The chamber is made to be quite comfortable. Because the treatment involves compression and then decompression, it’s normal to experience pressure in your ears just like you may experience in an airplane. Although you can’t chew gum inside, you can try opening your mouth and swallowing to get rid of the feeling. This usually only occurs for the beginning and ending of the session. When the target pressure is reached, everything should feel normal.

Our team and providers are personally committed to providing complete information about treatments, side effects, risks, and benefits. Once you schedule your initial appointment with a referral from your primary care physician, we will make sure you have all the information about our Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center. People who receive this treatment report high levels of satisfaction with their results.
