Summit Announces Expansion of Cancer Center

SHOW LOW — On Saturday, Sept. 22, Summit Healthcare announced the expansion and new name for Summit Healthcare Oncology Center at the “Dark Skies and Black Ties Gala.”

The name of Summit Healthcare Oncology Center has been changed to Summit Healthcare Cancer Center. Ron McArthur, CEO, said, “currently Oncology is not a term a lot of people are familiar with, changing the name to Summit Healthcare Cancer Center is recognizable to the community.”

Snehal Thakkar, M.D., Medical Oncologist spoke about the expansion at Saturday night’s gala and said, “our community continues to grow and more people will need our services. Patients have the right to choose where they would like to receive their services, we want them to know you can stay home and still receive state-of-the-art cancer treatment.”

Summit Healthcare announces plans for the expansion and modernization of its cancer center. The Devenney Group from Phoenix has been engaged to provide architectural and design services for the project, which is anticipated to get underway in 2014. Chris Skow, Project Manager and Pat Shemberger, Senior Designer for Devenney, has engaged with Summit Healthcare staff and management to design a state-of-the-art Cancer Center for the White Mountain communities.

The preliminary design calls for an extensive upgrade to the current facility, as well as providing approximately 10,000 square feet of additional area. The exterior of the building is designed with a covered drop off area, healing garden and terrace for patients and family to enjoy. The expansion and remodel of the existing interior space incorporates an atrium, consulting and education rooms for patients, a child’s play area and dedicated pharmacy for the Center’s patients.

Summit Healthcare’s Foundation has taken responsibility for funding the Cancer Center’s expansion project. Renderings of the project design are currently on display at Summit Healthcare in the main lobby.
