If you’ve been struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep at night, or you find that you don’t feel rested in the morning even after getting enough sleep, your care provider may recommend that you complete a sleep study. At Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, our care team is here to provide you with a wide variety of healthcare services. Let’s take a look at what happens during a sleep study.
What Happens During a Sleep Study?
During your sleep study, you’ll typically spend the night at the hospital in a room specially designed for monitoring patient sleep patterns. Before you go to sleep, your care provider will attach electrodes and sensors to various places on your body to record different data points as you sleep. Your eye movements, brain waves, heart rate, muscle activity, and other pieces of information are recorded throughout the night. You may also be observed via video feed by a sleep technician who will watch for any unusual movements or behaviors during your sleep.
Analysis and Conclusions
After your sleep study, your care provider will read your data to learn about your sleep patterns. Based on the information gathered during your sleep study, your provider may diagnose a number of sleep-related conditions, including:
- Sleep-related movement disorders (like restless legs syndrome)
- Sleep-related breathing disorders (like sleep apnea)
- Parasomnias (like sleepwalking)
- Narcolepsy
- Insomnia
With the information gathered during your sleep study, your doctor will be able to provide treatment recommendations and perform further testing if necessary.
